What "compounded" means, and how our pharmacy is checked

You'll see the word "compounded" on our site. Here's what it means, and what we check before trusting a pharmacy with your medication.

What is a compounded medication?

A compounded medication is prepared by a licensed pharmacy for an individual patient, based on a prescription. Our medications are made to order for you and labeled with your name.

Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. That means the FDA hasn't reviewed the specific compounded product for safety or effectiveness. This is why the pharmacy you use, and the standards it follows, matter so much.

How our pharmacy is checked

Your medication is prepared by a 503A compounding pharmacy that is:

  • LegitScript certified. LegitScript independently reviews online pharmacies and healthcare providers for legal and safety compliance.
  • NABP accredited. NABP (the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy) is the national association of state pharmacy boards.
  • Following USP <797> standards for sterile compounding: the national standards for preparing sterile medications.

NADforWellness itself is also LegitScript certified.

What "503A" means

"503A" refers to Section 503A of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the part of federal law that covers traditional compounding pharmacies.

A 503A pharmacy prepares medications one patient at a time. Each one starts with a valid prescription written for a specific person. It isn't mass-produced and stocked on a shelf. 503A pharmacies are licensed and inspected by state boards of pharmacy, and sterile medications like injectables must be prepared under strict USP <797> standards.

What that means for you: your medication is prepared for you, under a prescription from a licensed physician who has reviewed your health history, and it's labeled with your name.

Prescription first

Nothing ships without a prescription. A licensed California physician reviews your health answers first, and only then is your medication made to order and shipped cold to your door in an insulated, ice-packed mailer.

A word of caution about "research" products

Some websites sell injectable products labeled "for research use only" or "not for human use," with no prescription and no physician involved. Those aren't medical programs. Ours is.

Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. Prescription required; a licensed physician determines eligibility.
